The urea breath test is considered the gold standard non-invasive method for detecting active Helicobacter pylori infection. You swallow a small capsule containing urea labeled with a carbon isotope, then breathe into a collection bag. If H. pylori is present in your stomach, it breaks down the urea and releases labeled carbon dioxide, which is detected in your breath. This test is performed at a Labcorp location and requires a brief in-lab visit. It is excellent for both initial diagnosis and confirming eradication after treatment.
