Lipase is an enzyme produced by the pancreas that helps digest fats. It's considered more specific to pancreatic conditions than amylase and stays elevated longer after an acute pancreatic event. Elevated lipase is the primary lab marker for diagnosing pancreatitis. It can also be elevated in bowel obstruction, kidney disease, and certain medications.
