Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder where red blood cells become misshapen and break down, causing anemia, pain crises, and organ damage. Sickle cell trait (carrying one copy of the gene) is usually asymptomatic but important to know for family planning and certain medical situations. This screening test detects abnormal hemoglobin variants. It is recommended for individuals of African, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, or South Asian descent, or anyone with a family history of sickle cell disease.
