The Monospot (heterophile antibody) test is a rapid screen for infectious mononucleosis, an illness caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Mono commonly presents with extreme fatigue, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, and fever — symptoms that overlap with strep throat and other infections. This test detects heterophile antibodies that appear during active EBV infection, helping to quickly confirm or rule out mono as the cause of symptoms.
