Lipoprotein(a) is a type of LDL particle that is largely determined by genetics. Elevated Lp(a) is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke that standard lipid panels do not measure. Since Lp(a) levels are genetic and largely stable throughout life, this test only needs to be done once. The American Heart Association recommends measuring Lp(a) at least once for anyone with a family history of early heart disease.
