Haptoglobin is a protein produced by the liver that binds to free hemoglobin released when red blood cells are destroyed. When red blood cells are being destroyed faster than normal (hemolysis), haptoglobin is consumed rapidly and blood levels drop. Very low or undetectable haptoglobin is a hallmark of hemolytic anemia. This test is critical for diagnosing the cause of anemia when standard CBC and reticulocyte results suggest red blood cell destruction. It can also be elevated as an acute-phase reactant during infection, inflammation, or tissue damage.
