The Galleri test by GRAIL uses next-generation sequencing to detect cell-free DNA (cfDNA) shed by cancer cells into the bloodstream. It can identify a shared cancer signal across more than 50 cancer types — including pancreatic, ovarian, liver, esophageal, and other cancers that currently have no recommended screening tests. When a cancer signal is detected, the test also predicts the tissue of origin to guide follow-up diagnostic workup. The Galleri test is intended as a complement to, not a replacement for, standard-of-care screenings like mammography, colonoscopy, and PSA. It is recommended for adults aged 50+ or those with elevated cancer risk. In clinical studies, the test demonstrated a low false-positive rate (0.5%) and detected cancers across all stages, though sensitivity is higher for later-stage cancers. A negative result does not rule out cancer. This is a premium screening test performed and billed by GRAIL, Inc.
